How to paint a wooden boat

One of the great mysteries of shipbuilding increasingly modern today is the amount of hi-tech gobble-de-gook that the average homebuilder boat is expected that when it comes time to paint the boat after the impressive number of sanding, fairing and hard work (on all) and more fruits of their work now needs a deep lustrous shine that painting now promises to do. This part, my opinion at least, is one of the best parts of the building naval arrival! (Well, at least initially arrival!)

Painting a boat used to be a relatively simple task. It was a good day enough dry, one of Dad's paintbrushes, one petrol turpentine, a roll of tape, a pink card is left of the decoration and a half gallon of enamel paint bright blue in the local hardware … were the days!

Not so today, my friends! The boat builder out of the child entrusted local art Superstore be better prepared for the worst, not only he (or she) will face a massive attack on their portfolios, but a bewildering variety of silly high-tech genius wow wizard (in general) will lead to fast is to throw in the general direction of the faint hope that you will give into the stress and buy a few liters of Goop polurethanicalslitheryaminomolecular the last has just come in. For example, you will face trade names as "Interlux Interthane coating. I mean, come on, that looks like a Space Invaders New Game! This is painting with blood! What many others, but I'm sure most of what I say.

Another example of the kind of thing that makes me mad is that you can you expect to buy several liters of an iso-cyanate polyurethane two-component marine paint joyfully told its illegal to spray least have a proper authority to do so, drone drone! I guess I should make a new name to go with the new corporate policies painting charge up to $ 150 per liter for some of these new fangled paintings! What the hell have discovered that very expensive to establish this kind of thing? I had the impression that the painting was a few liters of linseed oil, turpentine oil, some drying agents and a few ounces of pigment … You can really play?

BACK TO BASICS

So why do we paint wooden boats? Or any other vessel What for that matter? The first part of this question is simple. Boats lot smarter and better if a little sparkle and shine … is that human nature after all. The second part of this question is: We want to protect. Ok, what? Well, wood rot if you do not paint, right? – WRONG! Wood left to itself will not rot. The wood decays only as a result of their environment. There are several cases of this form, plain untreated wood can last for centuries, while in the right environment. Basically, there are few elements that start rotting wood. biological attack spores, fungi, temperature, high humidity or total absorption, physical attacks and crustaceans jokes that allow the penetration of all the above elements.

Do not forget that contaminated water can degrade the wood to the point where it rots …. Let's add a chemical attack to that list too. So, taking into account all these reasons convincing to protect our boat deck paint totally against these attacks.

PREPARATION OF WOOD

The preparation of Wood may cover a wide variety of needs. If the boat is a new version, you will not have to go through many preparatory stages of an old ship may have to pass. With some forms of shipbuilding, where he built a boat by a different method, such as boards and molding strips cold, we paint the boat as if it was a fiberglass boat, due to the fact that it is layers of fiberglass covered wood or wood covered with epoxy paint will not adhere to conventional correctly. However, if you want to protect the bare wood, then use a different approach. Wood in its natural state has millions of bare thin hollow tube that runs through it, constructed of cellulose in its natural form. We have to seal these tubes to prevent water from entering them. Therefore, the seal and coat of paint first.

First thing to do is clean away any loose paint and flaking or damaged more than dirt that remains in the hull – it seems easy if you say fast, but this must be done! If necessary (and often is) degrease the hull with a degreaser paint after removing all the dust property preferably vacuum. Remember, it is absolutely necessary to get all the back shell to bare wood all dry clean grease and dust.

The imperfections and FILLER

Obviously, not many wooden boats are perfect on the outside. There are many defects, cracks, faults and fractures, large and small to comply with the filling and washed before priming sanding boat. It's a bit of a task, but time spent here will reward you with a boat that will no doubt be better and longer life. Some people to fill those holes and imperfections with epoxy wood filler, but this is not a good idea. Some time later, for example, when the ship must be a repair, will be the devil of a job to remove the resin from a hole. It is preferable to use a type of wood filler that dries very hard and fast, but never with such force that can not be removed later. For example, painter, glazing compound is a smooth paste is rather hard that adjustment can be quickly applied and sanded painted and then satisfactorily. Carvel boats usually only the seams filled with a special fabric compound after the ship was underway. Once the boat was full and smooth faired all dust removed we are ready to put some paint on the real. Remember, the difference between a professional paint job and an amateur is preparation!

Wood preservation

There are two schools of thought on the treatment of bare wood with a wood preservative. I heard stories primers and paints will not adhere to many of them. In my case, I have never personally had that happen to me, I'm generally in favor of using them. However, I am convinced that in many cases where the paint refuses to adhere to the wood because wood does not dry properly after the application. There is a certain percentage level moisture content of wood that everything (and most of them differ slightly) where paint of any kind, simply does not stick. You can go up to five percent in some forests. Above all, make sure your wood is dry enough to allow any paint or filler to join. Remember also that the salt deposits in the wood easily contain water and keep it moist …. If your boat is in salt water rinse in fresh water before starting to paint. If and only if, the dry wood preservative, The next step is:

FIRST

The first layer of primer to go in its hull is finished in metallic gray. It is a good introduction to the use and which is composed of millions of microscopic metal plate (aluminum) plates that are in the top of the other to water a very difficult time to go … if you start rose, for example, circular molecules of substances that allows infiltration of water much faster … done! Grey primers also contain certain oils and most are contained in the mold (biocides for you and me) we took two gray primer on the waterline and three, no less, below it.

Further comments on some finishes

World is a primer there and confusion about their qualities are very common. On the basis of dry wood, primers metallic gray are good as explained above. Also, many oil-based primers for well known companies are also very good and we do the work perfectly. Hi-build primer never, however, proceed with caution and I must say that I personally have had enough with them. Rather than containing titanium dioxide (Talcum powder to us a lot) and even when fully cured can absorb large amounts of moisture that may prevent the adhesion of the paint very good. To avoid This table Hi-build a good introduction to dry clear day and avoid excess humidity. So, as soon as possible, apply the finish coat for locked in. Note that hi-build primers are a type of paint and can suffer badly from scratches in the stone pebble beaches or even the release and when trailers boats. When sanding these primers to remember that huge clouds of white dust are released so be aware of where the sand and use appropriate safety masks.

Coat

Again, there are many types to choose from. Let's get two packs of the first form. Bi-Pack Polyurethane should be applied over a two-component epoxy binder first. Was completed and it is fantastic, but it must be absolutely sure that the wood underneath does not move because the paint cures so hard that he can and will crack (strip plankers ships and the cold are your best bet here … molded Of course outside of the glasses). The main reason is that timber ships built to move or "work" as it is known. You may very well if your boat was new glass timber …. no later than glass as a prevention method to avoid losses. Rarely boats and dry properly treated and are still sensitive to the movement of the wood inside the glass, as it was wet or dry rot and contracts too. Vessels have also been machined correctly, ie laminated wood strips at the joints instead of being crushed, a reasonable chance of not moving.

Ok, what? A backpack or pack polyurethane paints can be a good choice for a topcoat … are almost as bright and as durable as the two packages, but not quite! They are less expensive and much easier to implement than two packs of … there are plenty of them out there, so a little research you need, plus your choice personal … I will not participate in a slanging match about the best! However, remember the most important products of the paint manufacturers are usually known can! You choose!

So next on my list are marine enamels. Again, it is better to remember Marina, with nothing before him is often very expensive … a good place to stop in this quest is the department store chain equipment that sport one or two paintings in this category and I found myself before. It the name you're looking for!

Even with the quality Enamel Navy some decent white people are known to yellow with age and back is to buy white color or chamois cream. My last option in the marine enamel, is a newcomer … a water-based enamel. Personally, I have never used, but I've heard good reports and there must be some advantages to them, a quick cleaning a drink and you can even thinner!

CHOICE ASSORTMENT
L. Each of the paintings, as a result of their different uses and attributes.

ENAMELS house paint

Over the years the quality of Enamel paint the house has increased dramatically to the point where the sailors who know their cans of paint with it. It's a bit more flexible (and certainly cheaper) than most single pack polyurethanes and some colors, especially darker shades, tend to disappear earlier than others. However, the fact is that it can be an excellent option, especially if you are owner of a small boat and do not mind repainting every two years …. cheaper to buy, easy to use!

ACRYLIC WATER

A few years ago would not think acrylic paint your boat …. would have taken off in large pieces. This does not however apply today. My own boat, the J was painted in acrylic NICKY semi-gloss to Wattyl "sticks" and is really amazing. I gloss for the hull and semi-gloss white epoxy for bridges in a single package was very good. Never again to see the delamination. I paint the boat once a year with a roller and it takes less than a day … and she was forty-two feet long! It is another option!

Although it is your choice of main painting, but I urge you to remember one thing … Preparation is king … will save you money in the long run, of course.

How to apply PAINTING

Of course there are three main methods for the implementation of his paintings, spraying, brushing and rollering. There is another many people use a combination of the two latter, rolling and tipping, we will ensure that one later.

Check out the spraying. There are several prerequisites for a decent job of spraying. These are usually a decent workshop full exhaust fans and half of aerosol ventilation devices decent good (cheapo power under an order not cut the mustard) and above, the appropriate safety equipment and sufficient. There are always exceptions to the rule and there is a guy who works in Edge begins at the time and he did a fantastic job … imagine how it could be better if he worked on the inside! Also the weather, high humidity does not is good and when the spraying is not … more than one car as is often the case! Too Good painting is lost, and lost in the process. If you need to take you by boat to look like your car, spraying for you! Oh yes, Quick (ish) too!

Brushing by hand can be surprising if you are patient and what you do. I saw the ships that appear at first sight to be sprayed only to find they were painted by hand brush … …. Free atmospheric dust and bloody brushes good (I mean expensive) are a must here.

Finally, especially rollering tips "and roll" method. This requires two people working together as a team. We just roll the paint and the other follows closely with a brush and decent work "advice" bubbles left by the roll – incredibly smooth finish can be obtained by this method.
A word of warning, whatever method you use. Do not be tempted to touch up the paint drips or you will ruin the line finish …. Wait until the paint is completely dry, then make a face! It is tempting, but the paint always seems to freeze faster than you think!

A simple formula for calculating the amount of paint you need (for one layer)

This is interesting, if not exactly right! But it's close. This applies to the brush and spraying material. There is a different formula for that and do not know!
THE FORMULA
Single layer = length of the beam global ship x 0.85 x
Divided by square meters per liter which is covered in paint can instructions.

If you can not work in the paint manufacturer will tell you if you call the company hotline.Good luck!
